Saturday Snapshot - Shakespeare and Co.

Shakespeare and Company
Paris, France
May 2011

A modest  couple of four books came home with me.

Haunting of Hill House and Jamaica Inn are both on my RIP reading list this month - can't wait.
Book Thief, in all its weepy fantasticness, I read over the summer.
Tropic of Cancer is for another time.

Okay, now you've made me curious and I don't read your blog often enough to know the answers. Do you live in Europe and finding an English book store was a rare opportunity? Or do were you just blown away with the selection here?
My daughter leaves for Paris in two weeks and we were just talking about this book store. I told her to try to turn in the English-language books she is taking with her for ones she hasn't read. She loves to read and it may be a long three months with only a few books.

dizzy - only four because I had to find space in my baggage. I could have bought more, but airlines don't take kindly to heavy suitcases. Even these four, though, are a nice memento of my time there.

paulita - I live in Canada and was visiting Paris last spring. I knew I wanted to stop into Shakespeare and Company from all that I had read about its long history (it was also nice to have that hub of English language to retreat to as I don't speak much French.) They have a great selection of new and used books, a lovely view of the Seine and Notre Dame, and a cafe next door where you can sit down with your purchases over a cafe-au-lait. If your daughter is a reader, I would highly recommend she visit there while in Paris. It's a fabulous little bookshop.

What a great little shop - and you found a few books :) I would definitely seek this place out if I were to visit Paris. Thanks for telling us about it.

My question is "How long were you in the book store?" :)

Trish said...

jill - I know, right? All the possibilities . . .

mary - apparently there's another English language bookshop in Paris, too, but I just didn't have enough time to seek it out.

Trish said...

beachreader - lol . . . a long time. I had the afternoon to myself, so.

I think you were very restrained only buying 4!

Gorgeous photos :)

Trish said...

christine - thanks! Yes, books. Aren't they all so lovely?

sam - I rather thought so myself ;) I could have filled a box with all I wanted to buy.

That must have taken a lot of discipline to choose just four! They look like good ones.

I read Jamaica Inn a long, long, LONG time ago....when I was young! LOL

Time for a reread.

Thanks for sharing your adventure.

That looks like a great store to visit, and you brought home a nice little selection. I really liked the picture with the bookshelves and the piles of books in front of them. Feels a bit like our home at the moment :-)

Trish said...

laurel - it must be a good book since it's worth a reread!

mostraum - yes, the piles of books lol I'm always curious about the ones at the bottom of the pile. When was the last time they saw the light of day? I'd love to investigate . . .

Trish said...

lisa - Paris is fantastic, isn't it?!

sheila - yes, it is quite thick, but wow . . . it's so absorbing you hardly notice.

Oh, what fun! I was hoping to go back to Paris next month, but it's not going to work out.

Trish said...

reader - Haunting looks good, doesn't it?

sherrie - yes, choosing just four was quite difficult.

bermuda - I'm looking forward to getting back there some day, too.

Oh, that is so neat! I've always wondered what it looked like. It's a must-visit place for me if I ever get to Paris.

Leslie (Under My Apple Tree) said...

I would get lost in a bookstore like that. It would take hours to find me and drag me out!

Bev Hankins said...

I love that you were able to go to Shakespeare and Company. I have read so much about that bookstore.

I'd have a hard time leaving a bookstore like that...

Here's my Snapshot: http://myreadersblock.blogspot.com/2011/09/saturday-snapshot-september-10.html

alyce - it's in a lovely old building with creaky wooden floors and tall windows. I hope you get a chance to go there!

leslie - I went on my own because I knew I'd be in a dreamy trance the whole time.

bev - yes, I love that it has such a storied literary history. So cool!

smellincoffee - they're lovely, aren't they?

pooch - it's a very inviting place, as most book stores are.

I want that entire pile of books stacked on the floor...but I'd settle for the 4 you brought home. Great choices!

This reminds me that I need to buy books!

Here is my Saturday Snapshot post!

DesLily said...

wow lucky you! I want the Haunting of Hill House myself!

Trish said...

jess - haha yeah, that pile! The ones I bought were easy picks; the ones on the floor would need some real uninterrupted browsing time.

gautami - yes, I was kind of feeling that myself ;)

deslily - it's my next read! It so small, I'll want to savor it.

Ever since reading about this bookstore in Hemingway's A Moveable Feast, I've wanted to visit Paris. So jealous! :)

Trish said...

I hope you get a chance to go! It was really so much fun to see the store after having read so much about its history. A Moveable Feast was a fantastic book, wasn't it?
