Spooky Books

My appetite for creepy gothic fare whetted, I went in search of titles to add to my reading list . . .

~The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. (1886) - "Idealistic young scientist Henry Jekyll struggles to unlock the secrets of the soul."

~The Island of Dr. Moreau by H. G. Wells. (1896) - "An English traveler, shipwrecked on a remote Pacific island, meets notorious vivisectionist Dr. Moreau and the creatures that have resulted from his experiments in turning animals into human beings . . . "

~The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas (1846) - "Thrown into prison for a crime he has not committed, Edmond Dantes is confined to the grim fortress of Chateau d'If . . . "

~Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier (1938) - "The reader is ushered into an isolated gray stone manse on the windswept cornish coast . . ."

~The Turn of the Screw by Henry James (1898) - "The narrator is a young governess sent off to a country house to take care of two orphaned children . . ."

~The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle (1902) - "What is the truth behind the legend of the devil-beast that's haunting the lonely moors . . . ?"

~The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde (1904) - "A dreamlike story of a young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty . . . "

~The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1820) by Washington Irving - "The story follows Ichabod Crane, a strange and superstitious teacher, who disappears after being chased by a headless horseman . . "

~Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (1818) - "A monster assembled by a scientist from parts of dead bodies develops a mind of his own . . . " (already read it - excellent!)

~Dracula by Bram Stoker (1897) - "A classic gothic horror that continues to inspire vampire myths to this day . . . " (also read it - also excellent!)
