I think we are well advised to keep on nodding terms with the people we used to be, whether we find them attractive company or not. Otherwise they turn up unannounced and surprise us, come hammering  on the mind's door at 4 a.m. of a bad night and demand to know who deserted them, who betrayed them, who is going to make amends. We forget all too soon the things we thought we could never forget. We forget the loves and betrayals alike, forget who we were.

Powerful! I'd sure like to know why you chose to post this....

I know, right?! Hmm good question…

I think it's because I do some of my most vigorous worrying in the middle of the night. It's not particularly productive, but it does wear me out to the point that I am forced to just let go of past issues if there's nothing more that can be done about them. Something like that.

Joan Didion is one of my favourite authors because she often nails the more tricky aspects of our psychological makeup with just the right words. She's quite amazing.

Trish, thank you for your explanation! I'd not heard of Joan Didion. I'll have to look into her work. Thanks!
