The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith JK Rowling

I think it's pretty much common knowledge in the book world by now that Robert Galbraith is actually none other than JK Rowling writing under a pseudonym. After reading and falling in love with her last book, The Casual Vacancy, I was stoked to find out she had another book out under another name. You crafty gal, JK. You crafty gal.

Anyhoo. A Cuckoo's Calling is a fun read. This is her first foray into detective stories and although I found it  a teensy bit cheesy (think Baretta circa 1977) the writing is splendid, the characters interesting, and the story engrossing. I ate it up. Hopefully this will be the beginning of series.

After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, and creditors are calling. He has also just broken up with his longtime girlfriend and is living in his office.
Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: His sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry, known to her friends as the Cuckoo, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man. You know, yours is the first review I've seen of this book. I'm glad you enjoyed it, and I think being a bit cheesy is OK.

I thought this was pretty enjoyable (perhaps a tad too long, but good).

I agree with you, it really was a bit cheesy but pretty good, anyway! And a sequel is apparently coming out next year.

Sam - I'm starting to see some reviews and they've all been pretty positive. I'm afraid my 'review' was more of a quick blurb, though. There are just too many details and I was afraid to give something away!

Diane - It was a bit on the long side. Good for the beach or the backyard hammock.

Priya - Cool! I'll be on the look out for a new title from "Mr. Galbraith". Yeah, the cheesiness was kind of funny, almost like she was parodying '70s police shows.

Pooch - Thanks for the link. I'll be over to check it out. Glad you enjoyed it too!

Ms. Rowling has done it again [Oops we're not suppose to know that she wrote the book]. Well, I'm glad I purchased it anyway. It had so many twists and turns it kept my mystery loving heart pumping.
