I suggest that the only books that influence us are those for which we are ready, and which have gone a little further down our particular path than we have yet gone ourselves.
I had a bit of trouble with this one. I think that the books that have the most impact are the ones that shake us up a little bit, meaning that we were perhaps not quite ready for them. Like the rest of the quote says, '. . . gone a little further down our particular path than we have yet gone ourselves.' i.e. not knowing what exactly is around the next bend.
