This snapping turtle was in the bushes at the side of my mother's retirement home parking lot. There's a river nearby, but we weren't exactly expecting to see this guy. I took a quick picture and then jumped into my car. As much as I like the outdoors, it's encounters like this and this that have me wondering how I even leave the house.

I don't often come across things like this...not here in this city. But when I lived in the foothills, there were surprising creatures.

I can understand you running away - I've heard about the damage that those snapping turtles can cause. I think turtles in general are cute though.
Good pic! I am not afraid of turtles, I usually pick them up and help them across the road to avoid the "SQUISH!" Of course, I dont think I have ever encountered a snappy turtle....
That turtle is pretty neat.
We've found some turtles in strange places over the years too, especially after the creek was high. They may be slow but they're strong!

Growing up we had a turtle. Myrtle, that I guess was a snapping one, b/c she looked a lot like your picture. Great shot!

I'm not a fan of snapping turtles either ... they can get so big and they do a real number on the ducking and water bird population if they get established in a pond or wetland ...
I'd use the zoom lens to get a photo of a snapping turtle! Although I've never encountered one I hear they can be nasty.

when we were young a foolish [just foolish today], my not-as-yet brother-in-law and i used to go skinny dipping in various ponds/creeks in the chippawa area, near niagara falls... he told me snapping turtles were around, up to 35-40 lb... luckily, none decided to taste us at the time...
oh, crap... i see i am not the first to mention 'snaps'! :P
Will a snapping turtle chase you, or just snap if you bother it? Not as scary as 'your' snake!
