The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver DNF *weep*

Noooo! **plaintive cry into the night** It can't be! I never thought a Barbara Kingsolver DNF would even be POSSIBLE, but here it is. The whole setup of this book in diary entries and newspaper clippings just irked me from the very beginning. I don't mind 'clippings' occasionally in the context of a story, but a whole book's worth? I'm just not a fan. All is not completely lost, however. It is impossible for Barbara K to write a bad sentence or weak description. I enjoyed the exchanges between Harrison and Frida, and all the kitchen scenes and outdoor scenes - two hundred pages worth! I really wanted to like this book, but alas. With so many other books awaiting discovery, I could not justify spending one more minute on something that was irritating me more with every page.

I will probably keep it on the shelf for a while longer, though. You never know . . .

Wounder how the audio would work considering what you wrote?? I do want to try this one.

Good point! I think I'll try listening to the rest of this on audio from the library. The flow of the story may well be smoother when listened to rather than read.

Are you at the bit when he's in the States? No more of a spoiler than that, but I LOVED this book...but that section.....it was a slog. Totally worth it though, when you're ready, I'd give it another shot.

okay, yes, I think I'll give it another shot later in the summer. I've just had an influx of 'new' books recently that are calling my name . . .

I liked this one, although I thought it wasn't as good as The Poisonwood Bible. It was a very slow read.

Sam - yes, it's the diary and article format that I find so slow and tiresome. I think audio will be the way to get past that.

Debbie - With all the encouragement I've been getting, I am resolved to keep going one way or another. Stay tuned ;)
