The human mind is not capable of grasping the Universe. We are like a little child entering a huge library. The walls are covered to the ceilings with books in many different tongues. The child knows that someone must have written these books. It does not know who or how. It does not understand the languages in which they are written. But the child notes a definite plan in the arrangements of the books - a mysterious order which it does not comprehend, but only dimly respects.

I love this quote! I have always liked Einstein, perhaps because my mother (a physics professor) explained the theory of relativity to me the first time when I was in kindergarten.

Amazing, isn't it?! Einstein, as wise as he was, was still in awe of that which he couldn't explain or comprehend. Carl Sagan also made some wonderful observations regarding humans and the universe. How cool that your mom is a physics professor - your family must have some interesting conversations!

A brilliant quote. Have you tried walter isaacson's biography of Einstein, Trish?

No I haven't, but thanks for bringing it to my attention. I'll certainly be on the look out for it now.

This is so true - I remember learning about the size of the universe in physics and not being able to comprehend it at all.

And if the universe is constantly expanding - what is it expanding into?
