Top Ten wtf? Endings

A Top Ten meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish

This will be brief. My list is not very long and my explanations are nil because of the obvs spoiler risk.

1. Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier

2. Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates

3. Perfume by Patrick Suskind

4. Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane

5. Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier

6. Jamaica Inn by Daphne DuMaurier (I was finishing this one up at 3am this morning and had to quickly add it to my list because . . .  holy crap! the ending?!)

Oh my gosh, you've just reminded me of the ending of Cold Mountain and now I am traumatised all over again! But these are definitely all shocking endings, especially Shutter Island (although I've only seen the film, I'm assuming it's the same). Great list!

I felt the same way about the ending of Rebecca - what happened?! It is a great book, not least because of the ending.

Sidne said...

because i have not read any of these books i must choose one to add to my TBR list. hmm, you recommend one, thats okay maybe Rebecca. lol

I could have easily added Rebecca and Jamaica Inn to my list - great books! I did have Shutter Island on my list this week!

Laura - yeah, 'traumatized' is the right word! Loved the book, but the ending . . . ?

Willa - Rebecca a book that keeps showing up on my reading lists because the whole book is just so fabulous.

Sidne - yes, Rebecca!

Bibliomaniacs - Shutter Island is a shoe-in this week!

I know what you mean about Daphne's books... but I have to say that I wasn't all that impressed with them!

Love your Reader's Bill of Rights!

Thanks for Hopping By...

Shutter Island was amazing... I totally couldn't get into Rebecca, which sucks because I've heard it's awesome.

Trish said...

Kate and Cat - Oh No! That's too bad you couldn't get into Daphne's books. I'm still pretty new to her and so far I've really liked her writing.

I have Cold Mountain to read soon on my TBR list! Am very intrigued now!

Tracy said...

I've only seen the movie of Shutter Island, but if it has the same ending as the book then I don't have a problem with it - is it better to live as a monster or to die as a good man?

I take it you mean the very ending of Rebecca? I know what you mean, but I love the rest of the book.

It figures Lehane would have more WTF endings! I'll need to add Shutter Island to my TBR list

REBECCA is the only one I've read so far. And I agree about the ending.

I always meant to read SHUTTER ISLAND but I just never got around to it. Maybe because I didn't like MYSTIC RIVER and thought S.I might be too much on top of that heavyweight tome. :)

Enjoyed reading your post.

I haven't read any of these (though I did see the movie of Shutter Island). Looking forward to checking some of them out!

I haven't read any of these! Though I did see Shutter Island and it did have a pretty crazy ending. I need to get to some Daphne DuMaurier sooner than later.

Jenny said...

Oooo, Shutter Island! How could I have forgot that one. Gone Baby Gone would have been a good one to add too. See? My brain just isn't working.

Trish said...

1girl - I'll be interested to hear what you think of it.

Tracy - I think the book is much better! The visuals are just too distracting for this story.

Red - Ha! Yes I love endings like this.

Yevette - I don't know much about his other books but I might give them a try just for comparisons sake.

Lisa - This week's theme was a lot of fun, wasn't it?

Brenna - The ending gave me whiplash lol

Trish said...

Yes, I've seen gone baby gone on a couple of lists today. I'll have to check it out.

I've been wanting to read Shutter Island! (:

You should definitely read I am the Messenger. It's one of the best books I've ever read!

LOL! Perfume, without doubt, has a WTF ending!
Cold Mountain ... ugh ... I loved the book, but I wasn't happy about the ending!

Carole Rae said...

I forgot all about 'Cold Mountain'...well...I guess that doesn't count because I seen the movie first, so I was slighlty prepared.

Trish said...

Sara - oh it's good!

Annie - I know, right? I wtf'ed through the entire book. It was so weird and gross I wanted to take a shower by the time I got to the end. I'm glad I read it, though. Even just to see what all the fuss was about.

Carole - The ending made me sooo mad!

Shanella said...

Is Shutter Island the same as the movie?

Trish said...

Yes, the movie stayed very close to the book but I liked the book better just because you can get into the character's heads. It was really cool!

I've been trying to decide between Jamaica Inn and My Cousin Rachel for my second du Maurier book. I guess I got my answer!

I'm still not sure whether I want to give Cold Mountain a try. It doesn't sound like my type of book, but it just seems wrong to live in NC and not read it. And my mom really loved the movie.

Rebecca is the only book of du Maurier's I've read. Although from this list it looks like she was a fan of absolutely ludicrous plot twists. I must check out Jamaica Inn.

Beth D. said...

I have thought about reading Shutter Island, maybe I should put it on the list.

Thanks for stopping by!

I'll have to look into My Cousin Rachel! I'll probably get a review post of Jamaica Inn up sometime in the next couple of days - but be forewarned - there will be spoilers because I have some issues.

That's so cool that you're in NC! I lived in Greensboro for eleven years and loved it. That's part of the reason I wanted to read Cold Mountain. It's a really good book, except for the ending! *gaaah*

Trish said...

couchpotato - yeah 'ludicrous' is right!

Beth D. - It's a pretty quick read. I say, Go for it!

Kailana said...

I agree on Rebecca. I have to admit I haven't read the rest of the books, though!

Epiphany Renee said...

Wow, I haven't read any of these but the first five are on my TBR. I love this meme for introducing me to so many diverse readers and reminding to get reading books that have been at the end of my TBR list for years.

Also thank you for visiting my blog, and if you would like to follow because you find me intriguing, or amusing, or interesting for any reason you are more than welcome to do so.

Thanks for stopping by! Glad you've read perfume as well. Seriously!! I just couldn't believe it! I guess that's one way to get ride of a character.

I saw the movie shutter island and refused, point blank refused what they said at the end. I liked the original premise better.

I've always meant to read a daphne dumaurier story but just haven't gotten around to it yet!

Trish said...

Kailana - well, if you give them a try at least you'll know to expect a twist at the end.

Epiphany - TBR lists are great, though. Most of my TBR books come from other people's recommendations and lists like this.

Scarlett - Ya I had a hard time accepting the ending of Shutter Island but then I thought it was a pretty cool way to present it.

Lee said...

I've only read Revolutionary Road from your list. "Life of Pi" would definitely be on my list (if I had one).

Trish said...

Life of Pi! Yes, of course! How could I have forgotten to add that to my list? It was one of the all time weirdest endings, ever.
