Readers Imbibing Peril VI 2011

I've been saving up all my creepy titles to read during September and October because, really, is there anything better than curling up with the likes of Poe, Wells, and Du Maurier on a misty autumn evening? Love that.

This challenge is open to anyone interested in getting their literary fright fix.

Here are some of the books I've been waiting all year to read. I'm not sure how many I'll actually get through before the end of October, but it's a start.

The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells

Jamaica Inn by Daphne Du Maurier (not sure if this classifies as 'creepy' but I loved Rebecca, so . . . )

The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole

The Turn of The Screw by Henry James

Asylum by Patrick McGrath

The Dante Club by Matthew Pearl

The Shadow of The Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

Tales of Mystery and Imagination by Edgar Allen Poe (been dipping into this one all year; it's fantastic)

I was planning to read some Daphne du Maurier for this challenge, but the library doesn't have any that I haven't read...

You chose some great books. I haven't read Jamaica Inn, but du Maurier in general usually makes for some good RIP reading!

We're both reading The Turn of the Screw. :) I can't wait to see what you think of that one.

Great list - I've been trying to find a copy of Asylum since reading a review earlier this year.
Daphne is always right for this challenge.

The Haunting of Hill House is on my list too. I love Jackson.

kailana & lola - I just discovered Du Maurier this past year by reading Rebecca -wow- what a fantastic author!

darlyn - yes, The Turn of The Screw looks like a good one, doesn't it?

cat - I became interested after reading a review last year too. Even the cover is creepy!

nulaane - yes, another recommendation! I'm not familiar with any of her other books, though. I'll have to keep my eye out for more.

I read The Dante Club a few years ago - definitely a good RIP pick!

Happy reading!

I've been dying to read something by Shirley Jackson since a long time. Good luck with the challenge.

I love your list! I'm excited to hear how you like the books you end up reading.

Ooh, I love Shirley Jackson! We Have Always Lived in the Castle is another good, creepy one if you haven't read it already.

You got some great titles on your list. I've always been tempted by Asylum and The haunting of Hill House.
The Turn of the Screww is quite good and Poe, of course.

I read The Turn of the Screw and Jamaica Inn in the last couple of years, and The Shadow of the Wind a few years ago - of those three, I'd say the only really creepy one is the H. James one (partially based on the real-life murder described in The Suspicions of Mr Whicher). The only vaguely creepy books on my TBR list are a re-read of Sarah Waters' The Little Stranger (for book club, so I have to read it soon), Wilkie Collins' The Woman in White and Susan Hill's The Woman in Black.

kate - oh good, I was hoping it would be. I kept pulling it out of the shelf all summer trying to sneak peeks.

violet - thanks! Yes, I've heard Shirley Jackson was good. I can't wait to get started and find out.

tbm - not sure how many I'll get through before the end of October, but it will be fun adding them to my reviews. I hope they're good!

amy - great! thanks for the heads-up.

caroline - yes, those look like some good titles, don't they? Poe is classic creep literature. love him!

tracy - I keep hearing about the woman in black. I'll have to look it up and see what it's all about.

deslily - it's been on my TBR list forever. I'm quite looking forward to finally opening it up.

You've got some great options here, some I've read and some I haven't.

I think Du Maurier fits this challenge. I haven't read Jamaica Inn, but I've read a couple of others.

Enjoy!

The Turn of the Screw is so wonderfully creepy! And I always associate Jamaica Inn with dark and gloomy churchyards, I think it's pretty atmospheric :-)

Trish said...

Yes, Du Maurier is great for atmosphere, isn't she?!

I read The Dante Club not long after it came out and enjoyed it--perfect R.I.P. read!

I forgot all about The Haunting of Hill House. I've wanted to read Jackson's book for awhile. Thanks for the reminder. I may have to add it to my list.

I read Asylum by Patrick McGrath earlier this year and LOVED IT. I hope you enjoy it, too! You can read my review on my blog - I think I gushed considerably, if I recall correctly... :)

simplerpastimes - great! I was hoping it would be a good pick.

beachreader - I've had it on my shelf just waiting for fall. It's not too long either, perfect for a misty evening!

natalie - yes! I think I remember reading your review last year. It's probably what prompted me to pick up a copy for myself.

The Island of Dr. Moreau is one I've always wanted to read but haven't. It'll be interesting to see what you think!

Good luck with the challenge. :D I don't have the stomach to read horror stories with an imagination of mine that leads me to nightmares. lolz. Just like what happened when I mistakenly watched"13th Ghosts" before going to bed. Fifteen minutes into the movie and I couldn't switched the TV fast enough. :( Argh, that movie gave me nightmares for 2 weeks. *shudders* Anyways, I was curious with your book choices. I read the summary of "The Shadow of the Wing, and "The Dante Club." I hope they're not too spooky as I've included in my TBR Thursday *gulps*

Trish said...

amanda - it looks good, doesn't it? It's one of those classics that I feel I should know more about.

raine - Yes, I'm hoping these books will be good and spooky rather than all out horror. I can do suspense, but not gruesome. Good luck to you too :)
