Saturday Snapshot

These painted eagles were all over Vancouver and Victoria in 2009 as a BC Lions Society for Children with Disabilities fundraiser in celebration of the upcoming 2010 winter olympics. Each one was decorated by a different local artist and then auctioned off in the spring of 2010. The ones I took pictures of and liked the most were the Native art and nature themed ones, but there were many other themes as well: sports, industry, history, communications etc.

These eagle sculptures were all just so beautiful.

Wow.

I love when cities and towns do this as fund raisers. Very beautiful. We had dogs and bears around here the last few years.

Hi Trish,

I think these kinds of fundraisers are a great idea, I am just so amazed at how much latent talent there is out there, that lies untapped.

My local city of Bath, South UK, did a similar fundraiser with elephants last year, then auctioned off the sculptures after the summer season had finished. We have also had pigs and chickens in the past:

I love it when cities do this! I remember seeing donkeys and elephants in Washington, DC one year

My city did this with our local celebrity Babe the Blue Ox a couple of years ago. It was so much fun to see the themed ones like the one with a air tank on it's back sitting outside the Minnesota School of Diving and the Elv-Ox painted up in the white and rhinestone Elvis jumpsuit. So fun!

Such a great way to beautify the city, raise money and promote the arts... all at once!

Chicago did cows years ago. When they were gone I missed seeing them.

Those are great! My favorite is the third one down that's got the layers of rainbow-type colors.

I love these! There's a town in southern Indiana that has painted pigs all over the place.

Oh wow, those Dala horses are so creative! I have a Swedish horse with the red design but the other designs are also really cool. I like the purple one with the grape vines. Thanks for the link.
