It was fascinating to witness the evolving friendship between journalist Steve Lopez and homeless mentally ill musician Nathaniel Ayers. Their friendship raises questions about how society treats and responds to people who are different and who perhaps don't want intervention and help. Those who are inclined and able do what they can but how much is too much, and should help ever be forced? Lopez struggled throughout with the worry that his newspaper column about Nathaniel would lead to attention that could possibly be dangerous for the a vulnerable man. But to withdraw after having gained such trust could be just as devastating.
The Soloist by Steve Lopez is a story not only of human connection but of beautiful music. I couldn't wait to finish the book so I could rent the movie and listen to the classical music Nathaniel is so enraptured by.
